Eduardo Valencia's Dream Debut Caps Off Historic Week for Tigers Prospects
Eduardo Valencia made his Major League debut as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and hit a home run in his first at-bat, becoming the tenth Tiger to hit a home run in his first MLB at-bat, but only the second to do so in a pinch hitting role, following Gates Brown in 1963. Batting in the seventh inning against Athletics pitcher Hogan Harris, Valencia sent a 2-1 94 mph fastball pitch deep for a 425-foot solo blast, extending Detroit's lead to 4-1 — the final score of the contest. The 26-year-old prospect, considered the Tigers' No. 21 prospect per MLB Pipeline, slashed .267/.353/.486 with an .840 OPS, 16 home runs, 49 RBI, 56 runs scored, and a stolen base in 76 games with the Mud Hens before his call-up.
