Tigers Face Pirates in Playoff-Push Showdown
The Tigers are still firmly in the AL playoff hunt, but they haven't done themselves any favors of late after being swept at home over the weekend by the division-leading White Sox. Though four games below .500 at 60-64, Detroit has stayed competitive enough to be a factor in a crowded AL playoff field, and are 16-12 since the All-Star break—the fourth-best record in the AL over that time. However, the Tigers will need contributions from a lineup that has been thinned by injuries—Riley Greene is day-to-day with a hamstring issue, and several other regulars are unavailable. Dillon Dingler, their slugging catcher, has been mired in a 2-for-38 (.053) slump.
On the positive side, rookie Eduardo Valencia is hitting .375 with two homers and a 1.287 OPS in his past five games, while veteran Gleyber Torres is batting .345 with a .904 OPS over his past seven.
Around the Club
-
Prospects — The Tigers are promoting slugging catcher/first base prospect Josue Briceño to Triple-A Toledo, putting their No. 4 prospect (and MLB's No. 54 prospect overall) a call away from the big leagues after a scorching stretch at Double-A Erie. Briceño batted .297 with eight homers and 19 RBIs in just 17 games for the SeaWolves, including five homers in seven games since Aug. 1.
-
Injuries — The Detroit Tigers placed RHP Jack Flaherty on the 15-day IL with a flexor issue.
Quick Hits
- Rookie Ben Malgeri popped two homers Friday against the White Sox.
- The Pirates have seen their playoff hopes dwindle in recent weeks, as they're 11-18 since the All-Star break and enter Monday six games out of the final NL Wild Card spot.
